Let’s have more SMILES at the workplaces

Who doesn’t want the workplace to be happy? After all, around one third of our lives are spent working!

So, here are some ideas to have more SMILES at the workplace….

·         S for Success:

Let’s celebrate success. Even the tiniest of achievements. These could be individual or collective. This will make people confident and happy. This will encourage people to try harder as they will have the attention of the colleagues. So, every week some time should be dedicated towards celebrating success and these hours will be make the team bond better and trust each other and collectively support each other for individual and collective successes. These sessions could also include the success stories of our children and extended families. After all everyone loves the praise for their children and indirectly it means that the company appreciates the efforts of the employee in grooming the future of mankind. And, it also means that the children become instruments of connecting over common interests. This may help the otherwise introverts to come out and bond with other employees whose children have common interests/ goals.

·         M for Mind:

The mind is our biggest tool. It controls all our actions. Therefore, we must take care of this most precious asset that we have. Meditation, exercises, mind control techniques all should be practiced collectively. Everyone should be encouraged to develop interest in learning about the mind. If the budget permits, get some external experts who can initiate the employees in the ways of mind control and meditation. It will help in controlling the negativity and spread positivity through powerful thoughts.

·         I for Information:

We are living in the age of information where everything is available on the social media and Google. It is therefore important that the employees have the information about the company FIRST. If they get to know anything about the company from an outsider, they may feel alienated. There must be a tool or a process where regular sharing of information can take place and it needs to be a two-way communication so that people can share their thoughts and feelings. If the thoughts and feelings are not addressed right, it may lead to negativity that can require a lot of investment of time and resources to mitigate at a later stage.

·         L is Laughter:

A company that laughs together, stays together. There must be lots of opportunities for the company where people can unwind and relax without worrying about work pressures. In-house stand up shows, in house bands and performances along with some other recreational/ fun activities at regular intervals will make people happy and bond better

·         E is Empathy:

The company needs to show empathy towards its people. Empathy should be an important part of the company culture where people with empathy are not seen as weak but are seen as strong people who can support others. Messages re-emphasizing on empathy should be something that is part of every meeting before the start. Empathy should be a way of life where people can openly describe their troubles with the full confidence that the person will not be judged or thought weak. And that there will be a genuine effort made to support and help the person.

 S is Sincere:

This is one point which is like salt in the food. Without this, everything else is just a show and waste. All the efforts should be sincere. Every word, every initiative, every gesture should be sincere.

In this world where everything is in a flux and things are changing at a rapid pace, if we can have these basics in place in the workplace, it can be so much easier for everyone to cope with the stress and have a harmonious was to work towards a common goal and succeed.

A toast to this thought!
